COLLECTION/CREDIT REPAIR |

Are mistakes on your credit report costing you money?
When a friend first who works in the credit
repair business asked me this question, I immediately tuned him
out thinking that he was giving me a sales pitch that I could
politely ignore. I told him I had great credit and did not need
to worry about my credit report. He told me I was probably right
and to call him about it if I ever needed to fix my credit
report.
When I was shopping for a loan to refinance
my house to take advantage of the low interest rates I told all
of the potential lenders that I had superb credit and asked only
about their “best” rates. But, when they ran my credit report I
was told that I not only did not qualify for the best rates, but
that I had a less than stellar credit score.
I did not understand how this could
happen. After all, I have been a successful attorney for ten
years and pay all my bills as they come due. I still received
several offers a week from credit card companies offering me
credit that I would routinely throw away without even reviewing
them. I called my credit repair buddy back and started paying
attention to what he said.
Your
Credit Reports have Information From Your Creditors
My credit repair buddy told me that even though I
should have stellar credit, it is possible that
proper information that should be on my credit report just
hasn’t made its way there. Or, that damaging information that
should not be on my credit report has mistakenly been placed
there. In some cases, other people’s bad credit history may have
been inadvertently been placed on another’s credit report.
Your credit varies depending on
the Credit Bureau
Another important piece of information was the
fact that each of the three major credit bureaus, Equifax,
Experian (formerly TRW) and TransUnion, maintain their own
credit report for each consumer. Their reports are NOT
necessarily the same. Thus, each of the three can have different
erroneous information and different credit scores (also known as
a “FICO” score).
For a small fee ($24) my friend ran my
credit report for all three credit bureaus. It turned out that
there showed several items of credit that should no longer have
been on my report. There were duplicate items of credit where I
had transferred a balance from one credit card to another. And,
the information on each credit report was different.
Why does my credit report
matter to me?
With this information I
started paying attention to the credit card offers I was
getting. That week I checked the mail at home and discovered
that the credit card offers we were getting did not seem to be
nearly as good as they used to be. Instead of having the very
low rates offered to us like we used to get, the “teaser” rates
were higher and did not last as long, and the final rate was
significantly higher than the offers we used to get.
My credit repair friend gave me some information
background information on what poor credit means to me. It can
be stated bluntly that poor credit costs me more money than if I
had good credit. Basically it boils down to this: creditors
(people from whom you borrow money whether by credit card, home
loan, etc.) generally believe that the better your credit rating
the less likely you are to default on any of your credit
obligations. The less likely you are to default, the easier it
is to obtain credit AND the better the terms of the credit you
obtain. Bottom line: The better terms you can get means the
lower your interest rate that means you save money!
The easiest way to repair
your credit report is to hire someone to do it cheaply and with
the least hassle for you. We
currently charge on an hourly basis for the work that we do at
the rate of $275 per hour for credit repair. The work we
do is based solely on the amount of time spent on a client's
file. Sometimes issues can be resolved quickly and
cheaply.
Can I repair my credit report
myself?
Sure. In fact both the
Federal Government and California have credit reporting laws to
protect consumers and place certain requirements on the credit
bureaus. An individual can do it without help. However, writing
dispute letters to each of the credit bureaus can be a daunting
and time-consuming task. Often, the cost in time to the
individual trying to learn the system on their own is frequently
outweighed by the relatively low cost associated with having
experts do it.
Cost of
having someone else repair your credit report
Other credit repair
companies charge significantly higher fees to fix credit
reports. These fees can go as high as several thousand
dollars. Thus, the credit repair program used by DONNER &
DONNER gives consumers excellent opportunity.
